In this story the focus should be on understanding the emotions of the characters and how they feel about what is happening to them. Point out how the eyes look, what the mouth is doing, and what the character is doing with the body (non-verbal language). If the child is familiar with the simple feelings of happy, mad and sad, then help them expand their vocabulary to understand worried, furious, mischievous, startled and scared.

"HUNDREDS OF YEARS AGO..."

"They liked nothing better..."
Ask: Look at the princesses' face. How do you think they feel about being eaten? How can you tell?

"When Elvira was born..."

"But soon her mother..."
Ask: Does Elvira want to eat the princess? How can you tell? How does her Mom look? Why does she look worried?

"and she didn't..."
Ask: How can you tell that Elvira doesn't like fighting?

"What Elvira liked..."

"The other little dragons..."
Don't let the child see the next page before reading this page.
Ask: How are the other dragons acting? How do you think Elvira is going to feel?

"This made Elvira angry."

"But it didn't change..."
Ask: What is Elvira thinking about? What are the dragons thinking about? What is Elvira feeling? What are the dragons feeling?

"The others teased..."
Ask: How do you think Elvira is going to feel. How do the dragons feel about what they did? Are they thinking about Elvira's feelings?

"This made Elvira..."
Ask: How can you tell that Elvira is furious?

"Well, dear, if you..."

"You want me..."
Point out how Elvira's eyes have gotten bigger.
Ask: How does mom feel about how Elvira is acting? How can you tell?

"So, she packed..."
Say: Make a guess as to where Elvira is going to go.

"At first the princesses..."

Ask: How do the princesses feel? Why would they be scared of Elvira? How does Elvira feel? Why does she feel sad?

"But once they..."
Ask: How do the princesses feel now? How can you tell? How does Elvira feel? How can you tell?

"They even painted..."

"One day, when..."
Ask: How do you think Elvira's parents are going to feel when they see her?

"Hello! Hello!..."

"This is the biggest..."
Ask: How does Elvira feel when her dad tries to eat her? Why does her father want to eat her?

"Dad, it's me!..."
Ask: How does Elvira's parents feel when they realize its her?

"Elvira's parents were..."

"The other little dragons..."

"When they saw..."
Ask: How do the other dragons feel when they see Elvira? Do you think they will still be mean to her?

"Soon all the dragons..."

"She made..."
Ask: How do the dragons feel now? How can you tell? How do you think Elvira feels now?

"Everyone was..."

"Except, of course,"
Ask: What are the dragons doing? Who do you think isn't going to be happy?

"the princesses."
