Story Retell Squares

Skills Developed:

Retelling a story in sequential order

Materials:

Story

A piece of paper

Pencil

Crayons (optional)

Instructions:

  1. First fold a piece of paper using a "hotdog" fold (long ways). Then fold the paper in half, and then half again. Open it up and you should have eight boxes.
  2. As the child reads the story, have him or her stop after the first page. Have the child write what is happening in the story. If possible, have the child start with "First________" in order to help with retelling. Then have the child draw a picture.
  3. Continue reading the book and pause every page or two and have the child complete step 2. Ideally, have the child use "first, next, then" and "finally" when writing the sentences.
  4. When finished with the book, have the child retell the story by reading the sentences.

Variation:

Tape record the child retelling the story. For comparison, you can tape the child when retelling a different book without using the squares. Have the child listen and decide which sounds like a better retell.
